| Research Summary: | Zion National Park is within the traditional homeland of the many Southern Paiute tribal bands. In its effort to improve interpretive programs to reflect the historic and contemporary presence of the Paiute people the park is initiating a project to record traditional Paiute basket-making for both tribal and park uses. Southern Paiute peoples have a long tradition of basketry -- a craft that, with the passage of time is in danger of being lost forever. This project is designed to work with a number of Southern Paiute bands to video document interviews with basket-makers till acting in heir craft. The video interviews will record basket weaving techniques and ethnographic information related to traditional basket making. The videos will be edited with tribal approval for use in the park's visitor center. Additional video products will edited solely for tribal purposes. This phase of the collaboration between Zion National Park and the UA Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology, is intended to result in final, refined production of the documentary DVD for Zion National Park, Pipe Spring National Monument and the Southern Paiute tribes involved in the projects. This will also allow for an additional meeting between the UA, the National Park Service, and tribal members to review project accomplishments and discuss related future partnerships. |
