Research Summary: This project will focus its research on an ancient Hopi village named Chevelon, which was occupied from about 1290-1390 in northeastern Arizona. Arizona State Museum has conducted mapping and excavations at Chevelon using Earthwatch volunteers in 2003 through 2005. During this period nearly 500 rooms have been mapped and 28 have been excavated. During the mapping and excavation of Chevelon it was noted that there is extensive burning of the village that occurred during its occupation. This is notable because excavations in five other villages in the cluster of which Chevelon is part show little burning. The research question is simple and straightforward: why is there so much burning at Chevelon?
